My role at Atlas RFID was to provide design strategy and execution for a Product Management team of 6 as well as a multi-disciplinary Engineering team of approximately 20 (3 Scrum teams). We built an HTML5 based mobile app called Jovix (Jobsite Visibility Extension) to perform supply-chain material tracking for mega construction projects like nuclear power plants and offshore oil rigs, among others.

My contribution spanned the full UX gamut, including user research, concept development, journey mapping, interaction modeling, wireframing, rapid prototyping, visual design, asset production and even a little HTML/CSS assistance to boot. Codepen FTW.

Here’s a glimpse into that journey…

Concepts, Whiteboards, and Wireframes

I quickly learned through discussions and workshops early on that a few of the biggest fundamental challenges were around designing a product that was maximally functional in both spectrums of extreme outdoor conditions, from blaring sunlight and scorching hot temperatures, to arctic conditions where the devices all need heater pads to operate. Constructing a highly condensed and efficient workflow were among many heavy considerations, as well as more tactical points such as higher visual contrast, larger touch targets, and improved overall legibility.

Deliberation and discussions were continuous, and we started to string together learnings and basic concepts into a foundational interaction model, clickable even in wireframe mode so stakeholders and selected end users could start validating our progress.

Layout and Visual Design

Once we received consistently positive feedback on the Userflow models, we implemented the visual design layer. Instead of relying on Windows driven desktop-centric elements, we switched to Bootstrap, and took advantage of it’s responsiveness and customization capabilities to create a design paradigm that addressed some of the major usability concerns in the previous prototype.

Upon launching the redesigned app with streamlined functions, feedback from the field was overwhelmingly positive. Data integrity improved due to significantly reduced amount of input errors, users were able to better manage their “outdoor” time, and productivity increased as a direct result of improved usability and performance.

Insights

The idea for Jovix Insights was borne out of the realization that we had amassed large amounts of data that would be infinitely beneficial to old and new customers alike. More accurate foresight and projections became a reality overnight, and it’s a value add that customers cannot live without.
